Report: No AWD Version Plan for the BMW M3, M4 & M5

During the 2014 LA auto show last week, we have a chance to talk to Mr. Alexander Bilgeri, VP of Corporate Communications of BMW USA.

According to Mr. Bilgeri, there will not be any AWD variants for the current M3 sedan and M4 coupe/convertible. When being asked about the next-generation of the M5 sedan, he also mentioned that BMW does not plan to make an AWD variant as well.

Mr. Bilgeri explained to me that, this decision is based on the fact that BMW upper management wants to keep the M car’s RWD tradition, and they want to keep the M3/M4/M5 go be a “pure sports car”.

Next BMW M5 Latest Information: V10 Engine Returning, M5 Touring Model Added

For some BMW M car owners, the act of using 6-cylinder engine for the new M3 (F80), and 8-cylinder engine for the latest M5 (F10) is a setback for the M department. Because the previous generation uses a V8 and V10 respectively.

Today comes a news that sounds encouraging. From our BMW insider, it looks like BMW is seriously considering to let the V10 configuration coming back for the next generation of M5 (G30 5-series), and also the future M6 too.

More News for The Next Generation BMW M5

The current generation of BMW 5-series (F10) is close to the end of its life cycle, and BMW will officially announce its successor (G10 5-series) in 2016 as a 2017 model.

We have covered some preliminary details of the next-gen M5 in our previous report. Today we see two more news about the G10 5-series:

1. A turbocharged 3-cylinder engine will be joining the 5-series product line
2. The G10 M5 will has at least 626hp from a turbocharged V8 engine

The M5 will be coming out 1 to 2 years after the “standard” G10 5-series goes on sale, we will update you with any news we heard down the road.

Latest News for Next Generation BMW M5

We got some insight about the next generation BMW 5-series, especially the M5, from our BMW insider.

– It will be the first time for a BMW M car, to use a 4-wheel-drive system;
– To offset the extra weight of the AWD system, the new M5 will use more advanced light-weight materials in the construction. The body-in-white will be 176 lbs lighther than the current M5;
– Turbo V8 engine, output will be more than 600 hp.
