What does the 2015 BMW ALPINA B6 xDrive Gran Coupe signal

It has been known to all for a while that BMW is going to sell the Alpina version of the 6 series Gran Coupe.

The key point is not only the Alpina car to be sold here in the US side. It sends us an important signal from BMW: the Bavarian auto maker finally feels necessary that it has a high performance versionĀ  AWD sedan in the market. Currenlty the BMW in-house performance branch “M”, is only providing rear-wheel-drive performance sedans and coupes.

Previously BMW never sold an Alpina version in US market, if there is already a M version being sold at the same time. For example we have BMW M3 here, so you will never see the Alpina B3 in the showroom. The only Alpina officially sold by BMW in US market is the B7, which is due to BMW does not have the M7 available.

BMW is already selling the M6 Gran Coupe; now it also brings the AWD B6 here. This unusual decision tells us, BMW feels the AWD requirement for its large sedan is quite urgent. This is because recent media test of its M5/M6 indicates these RWD monsters have a hard time to catch up with its Mercedes-Benz and Audi AWD competitors, in terms of acceleration and also handling.

When the engine output reach a high enough level, you do need four wheels to propel your car at the same time, withou losing traction. We are sure that in the next generation of M5/M6, BMW will provide its corresponding xDrive version.
