2015 Toyota Camry: What Does the Top Safety Pick+ mean?
Since the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) introduced the small overlap crash test back in August 2012, Toyota/Lexus has been struggling with this tough challenge for two years.
According to IIHS’s requirement, if a car does NOT perform well in the small overlap crash test, it will not earn the “Top Safety Pick+” rating. And this has been a major block for many Toyota/Lexus vehicles to get this rating.
Although Toyota has put in some effort previously, which made the 2014 Highlander to be rated as the “Top Safety Pick+”, its small overlap testing result is still not the best, which only gets an “Acceptable” rating. But the 2015 Camry helped to get Toyota out of this embarrassing situation. i mean, we are in the 21st century, right? Shouldn’t all automobile makers make sure their vehicles are striving for the Top Safety Pick?
IIHS has updated its rating on the 2015 model year Camry, which up its small overlap test performance to “Good”. IIHS applies the 2014 model’s structural measurements for the 2015 Toyota Camry so the reason why the IIHS award was a “Good” rating is because the Camry’s side curtain airbags were lengthened to further improve occupant protection in the small overlap crash. Since the 2015 Toyota Camry got “Good” ratings for all test sections, it’s no suprise it got the IIHS “Top Safety Pick+” rating. This is Toyota’s second vehicle that gets this honor. Bravo Toyota, good job.
Toyota’s Safety is Getting Better Thanks To the IIHS
As of today, the 2015 Toyota Camry is also the only Toyota product sold in the US to get a “Good” rating in the IIHS small overlap test. No doubt this will provide Camry’s US sales with another STRONG boost.
The Toyota Camry is getting better and better nowadays. Now that the 2015 Toyota Camry was awarded the “Top Safety Pick+” rating, the Camry really doesn’t have any issues that people can criticize (except for the exterior/interior styling, which is very personal and subjective). I am sure there will be a fierce battle within the mid-size sedan market next year.
Do you feel Toyota is a little late to the game on the safety issue?

I’m glad Toyota is considering safety, not to say they haven’t in the past. But, this is good news, especially since i own a Camry and my lease is up!
