Since the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) introduced the small overlap crash test back in August 2012, Toyota/Lexus has been struggling with this tough challenge for two years.

The 2015 model year sees the mid-cycle update for the Toyota Camry. Here are highlights:

– 2,000 new parts;

– 1.8 inches longer; 0.4 inch wider track;

– Enhanced body torsional rigidity, additional spot welds added to the door opening flanges;

– Brake system upgraded with a two-stage brake booster;

– Interior carpet adds 30% more insulating material;

– Interior panels have more premium materials;

– LED headlight available;

– New instrument panel design; a 4.2-inch TFT screen nestled between the 3-dimensional Optitron gauges on the SE, XLE and XSE trims;

– Revised electric power steering;

– Newly added XSE trim is another step up from the sporty SE trim...

The 2015 Toyota Camry will be revealed in the 2014 NY auto show. Here are changes we may see in the mid cycle updated 2015 Camry:

1. A CVT (continuous variable transmission) will be available in some non-hybrid models;

2. Valvematic (an upgrade to the current VVT-I technology) will be added to the 4 cylinder engine to improve the fuel efficiency, just like what the Corolla has right now;

3. A slight chance that a newly designed 2.0L turbo engine will replace the current tried-and-true V6 engine (and we are almost sure that this engine will appear in the upcoming Lexus NX CUV);
