On September 4th, BorgWarner opened its second factory in Taicang, Jiangsu Province in China. According to BorgWarner, this factory will supply turbocharger to customers such as Chang’an Ford, Volvo, Shanghai GM, BYD.
The BorgWarner new factory has 5 production units, and its production volume is estimated to reach 2 million units per year, by 2018. The first BorgWarner’s China factory, located in Ningbo, currently has 1.6 million units per year of production ability. In the future, both factories’ output will reach 4 million units per year.

This is the BorgWarner turbocharger supplied to VW for its EA211 1.4L engine.
The BorgWarner China factories not only supply parts to automobiles sold in China market, but also supply other international markets. In 2014, BorgWarner is expected to sold 1.65 million turbochargers in China, company revenue is around 420 million USD.
Currently, around 30% of new cars sold in China are using turbocharger; for European markets, this number is a whopping 85%. BorgWarner’s plan is to grow at 25% – 30% for the next 5 to 10 years.
One of the main disadvantage of turbocharged engine is the turbo lag issue. BorgWarner has been working on a solution, which will use an small electric motor to drive the turbine. Because the turbine is not only driven by the exhaust gas, therefore the turbo lag can be reduced significantly. BorgWarner has planned to released the new product 2 years later.
