Brief Analysis: The Volvo Scalable Product Architecture, and 2016 XC90

Today Volvo has revealed more details about the upcoming 2016 XC90. This time the information is focusing on the SUV’s architecture framework.

Starting from the 2016 XC90, most of the Volvo’s next-generation vehicles will be based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Within the SPA framework, only one thing is fixed: the distance between the front axle and the engine compartment firewall; Other than that, all other parameters are completely flexible, as shown in the bellow illustration.

Of course, the SPA is a front-wheel-drive layout.

Redesigned 2016 Volvo XC90 Interior Officially Revealed

Today Volvo officially released how the interior looks for the next-generation XC90. From the images we can see the center console is occupied by an iPad-like huge LCD screen, and a “Home” button on the bottom, which is similar to the iPad layout. This is because the XC90 is the first vehicle that utilized Apple’s CarPlay system.

Volvo does not say anything about the mechanical part, but please take a look at our previous report here. The new XC90 is expected to come with a 4-cylinder turbo+supercharged engine, output is around 302hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The XC90’s 8-speed transmission will be provided by Aisin, and AWD system sourced from Haldex.

More details of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Interior: central console has a 9.3-inch vertical touch screen to display information for related functionalities; it also offers Apple’s CarPlay system. Base model’s instrument cluster will has a LCD screen between the gauges; if you select the higher level trim, the entire instrument cluster will be replaced by a 12.3-inch LCD screen, which you can configure to let it display all combinations of driving information you need. Besides this, you can also opt of a HUD.

The third row will be more spacious than the current generation of XC90.
