Redesigned 2015 Mazda2 Revealed

Today Mazda has officially announced the newly redesigned Mazda2 (called the “Demio” in Japan). However, except the official images, few information is available. Below is what we have known for the powertrain at this moment.

– 1.5L SKYACTIV-D diesel engine, 103hp (77kw)@4,000 rpm and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque within 1,500 – 2,500 rpm
– Two 1.5L SKYACTIV-G gasoline engines, output unknown at this moment
– 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission
– HUD option available

Now let us take a look at some interesting facts about the rotary engine.

Advantages about the rotary engine

1. Because there is no crankshaft, valves, pistons etc., the rotary engine is lighter, runs with less vibration;

2. Longer strokes, less prone to knocking and less pumping loss, which is more suitable for turbocharging, direct injection and lean burning;

3. Quicker throttle response;

4. Less moving parts such as pistons, valves, so rotary engine has less probability of sudden failures when compared to other traditional internal combustion piston engines.

Update: The 2017 Mazda RX-9 with Turbo Engine

Remember we reported the Mazda RX-8 successor – the RX-9, is coming three year later?

Most of the information in that article still holds, with one exception and it is a good news. Previously we said it will come with a 300hp, naturally aspirated rotary engine; but today we get an update that, Mazda is planning to use a turbocharged rotary engine, which is planned to output around 449hp (335kW).

Redesigned 2016 Mazda Miata Will Be 220LBs Lighter

Mazda just announced that they will reveal the next generation of the MX-5 Miata, on Sep. 3rd. Below is the image of the current MX-5 Miata.

According to Mazda, the new MX-5 Miata will be around 220 lbs lighter than the current generation. Also from the video on YouTube posted by Mazda, the engine sounds is very similar to a turbo engine. Will the new Miata be offered a turbo engine? Or the rumored Skyactiv-D diesel engine?

Mazda RX-8 Successor Is Coming – the 2017 RX-9

We heard a news today that Mazda is busy working on the new generation of the RX-8 successor, which is famous for its industry-unique rotary engine. One possible name for the new car will be “RX-9”.

Some preliminary details:

– Naturally aspirated rotary engine with SkyActiv technology, output around 300 hp;
– Will be available in coupe style;
– Rear wheel drive layout (of course it must be)
– Two transmission options: 5MT or 6AT;
– Will be announced in 2017.
