Maybe you are thinking making long wheelbase version of a sedan is a normal thing for car manufacturers these days, how about making a LWB version of a crossover?
Well, you may cite the 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL as an example. But please be reminded that those are body-on-frame trucks, and it is much easier to extend the frame’s wheelbase than an unibody-structured automobile.
For Infiniti, we have known it is making the Q50L and Q70L (the later one will come to US market for the 2015 model year). But today Infiniti dropped us another bomb, which is saying it is also working on a LWB QX50, a.k.a QX50L. For those of you who are not familiar with Infiniti’s latest nomenclature: the QX50 is the EX35/37 previously.
According to Infiniti, the QX50L will be limited to the China market only – at least the upper management think so at this moment. The QX50L will be equipped with the VQ25HR 2.5L V6 engine, which is good for 218hp and 187 lb-ft of torque, and paired to a 7-speed automatic transmission.
As a side note, several days ago Nissan has announced that it is also going to build Infiniti models in China to satisfy supply for the local market. The first two models to be made in China are the Q50L and the QX50L. These two Infiniti models will be assembled in the Dongfeng-Nissan plant in Xiangyang, Hubei province in China.
