Porsche has not sold any car that has 4-cylinder engine for a long time in the US, however this will be overthrown next year, when the 2017 model year of the Boxster and Cayman hit the market.

According to Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche AG, the German sports car maker is going to put at least one turbocharged flat-4 engine in the mid-cycle-updated 2017 Boxster and Cayman.

The most possible choice of the 4-cylinder engine will be the 2.0L unit which is currently used on the Macan CUV, delivering 233hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

For the current generation of the Porsche Boxster (981), the highest trim is the Boxster GTS which has a 3.4L flat-6 naturally aspirated engine producing 330HP.

Recently Porsche has confirmed that they have been working on the Spyder trim of the latest Boxster, which is positioned above the GTS trim. While some previous rumors said we will not see a big HP jump in its engine, our source told us yesterday that Porsche may replace the 3.4L engine with the 3.8L one (used in the current Cayman GT4 and 911 S/GTS/GT3 ), and its output will be set to 375HP.
