Report: 2015 Mercedes-Benz S500 Coupe Will Receive 9G-Tronic Transmission

Mercedes-Benz has used the 7G-Tronic transmission for many years, it is time for a renewal.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz has released its successor: the 9G-Tronic 9-speed transmission, and was firstly put in the 2014 E350 BlueTEC sedan, the CLS 220/250/350 BlueTEC and also the CLS500.

Now the factory has decided to extend the new transmission to the latest S500 Coupe. According to Mercedes-Benz, the 9G-Tronic transmission is able to handle torque up to 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm). Last year, Mercedes-Benz debuted its 9 speed transmission (called 9G-Tronic) in its European market E class sedan.

Although with the same aluminum made torque converter bell housing, compared to the current 7G-Tronic, this 9G-Tronic transmission changes to use magnesium alloy to construct its main casing, which is lighter and retains the same strength. The transmission oil pan is made with plastic though.

However, there is no dramatic difference of the mechanical shifting parts between the 9G and 7G transmission. Both of them have 4 planetary gear sets and 6 shifting elements (3 multi-disc clutches and 3 multi-disc brakes)...
