You may challenge the rule that, a “true” luxury brand need to have a full-size sedan to prove the brand’s position; but at least most of the luxury brands in the world are doing this. Even for some brand that did not have in the past, are planning to do this – for example the Volvo S100 we reported a while ago.
For Cadillac, it does have a full-size sedan now (the XTS), but that it is based on the front-wheel-drive platform. In most people’s mind, FWD contradicts with “true luxury sedan”. For example you will not see a FWD Rolls-Royce Phantom, or a FWD Bentley Mulsanne. It looks like guys from Cadillac also agree on this, so they are now making a rear-wheel-drive full-size sedan.
According to Cadillac, the upcoming RWD flagship sedan will be named “LTS” and will be announced in the 2015 New York auto show. features on the new car includes:
– GM’s semi-autonomous driving technology (Super Cruise)
– Exterior styling borrowed from the Ciel and the Elmiraj concept cars
We also got some powertrain information from our GM insiders. At least 3 engine options will be offered in the 2016 LTS:
– 3.6L LFX naturally aspirated V6
– 3.6L LF3 twin-turbo V6
– GM’s Generation 5 small block V8 (LT1, or EcoTec3) – which is also used on the latest Corvette, Cadillac Escalade etc.; it will come as either the naturally aspirated version, or may be the supercharged version.
