Facelifted 2016 BMW 3 Series Comes with New Engines

The current generation of BMW 3 Series (F30) has been around for more than 3 years and it is due for the mid-cycle refresh. Today BMW announced some details about the upcoming 2016 model year 3 series. The biggest change is the introducing of 3 new turbocharged engines: the B38 3-cylinder, B48 4-cylinder (B47 for diesel) and finally the B58 6-cylinder.

Below are the details (please note: some models may not be sold in the US market):

– 2016 316d, 318d: new B47 turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder engine; 316d output: 114hp
– 2016 318i: B38 1.5L turbocharged I3, 134hp (100 kW) and 162 lb-ft of torque, 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and top speed is 130mph
– 2016 320i: B48 2.0L turbocharged I4, 180hp (134 kW) and 214 lb-ft of torque – same hp but higher torque
– 2016 320d: B47 I4 turbo diesel, output increased to 188hp (140 kW, compared to 2015 model’s 180hp)
– 2016 330i will replace the current 328i model, using the new B48 turbo I4, 248hp and 258 lb-ft
– 2016 330d (replaces 328d): using the new B47 turbo diesel I4
– 2016 335d: using the new B57 turbo diesel I6, output 308hp (230 kW)
– 2016 340i (replaces 335i): new B58 turbo I6 engine, output: 322hp (240 kW) and 332 lb-ft; 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, top speed is 155 mph
– 2016 330e plug-in hybrid (replaces the current ActiveHybrid 3): B48 I4 plus electric motor, 248hp (185 kW) and 310 lb-ft of torque; 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, top speed: 140 mph
– 2016 M3: powertrain is carried-over, no change
– All non-M3 models can be equipped with either the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual one
– xDrive optional on the 320i, 330i, 340i, 318d, 320d and 330d
– Station wagon will still be offered as the 330i and 330d models with xDrive

Besides the powertrain upgrade, BMW also fine-tuned the chassis (revised the suspension), enhanced the handling. What is more exciting is the introduction of an all-new Track Handling Package (for gasoline engine models only), which includes good stuffs like the variable sport steering, adaptive M suspension, M sport brakes etc.
