Exclusive: German Automotive Manufacturers Start to Import Steel from China

Previously, auto makers in Germany usually source the high-strength-steel from local suppliers. Since the smelting technology and quality in China’s steel industry has made significant progress in the recent years, some German factories started to consider the benefit of buying steel materials from China, and they took action in last month.

On 05/24/2014, the first batch of S500MC high yield strength steel made by the Tangshan Iron and Steel Group Company (aka. TangSteel), weights 500-ton in total, was shipped to Germany customers.

The S500MC steel is defined in the European’s EN10149 standard: “EN 10149 – 2 : 1996   Specification for hot-rolled flat products made of high yield strength steels for cold forming. Delivery conditions for thermomechanically rolled steels“. Under the standard, the tensile strength range should be within 550-700MPa, and minimum yield strength should be greater than 500MPa. This type of steel is commonly used in making structural parts of the car frame.

The batch that shipped from TangSteel, with a thickness of 2.6mm, has the tensile strength between 590-660MPa, and yield strength reaches a level of 540-590MPa, elongation ratio is within 17-21%. Obviously, the quality of TangSteel’s product not only meets, but also exceeds the requirements of the EN10149 standard.
