Toyota Confirmed Sub-GT86/Scion FR-S Compact Sports Car

It has been rumored for sometime that Toyota has planned a sports car product lineup consist of a total of 3 models: the current GT86 (Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ in the US market), one positioned below it and another one above it.

Today Toyota confirmed the GT86’s little brother, internal code name “69DZ”. The new compact sports car pays homage to the Toyota Sports 800 back in the 1960s (1965 model shown below) and it will look like the Sports 800 wearing the 21th century design language.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Curb Weight Released

We have been covered the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata extensively in the past year, and you can see lots information from our articles here. Today Mazda finally released the curb weight spec for the US market model.

Here are the numbers:

2016 MX-5 Miata with manual transmission: 2,332 lbs
2016 MX-5 Miata with automatic transmission: 2,381 lbs

For your reference, the current 2015 Miata weights 2,480 lbs (manual transmission), and 2,542 lbs (automatic transmission). So the new model is looking at a 150 – 160 lbs weight saving from the current one.

However there is one important spec we did not know until last Friday: the engine output. Here comes the number:

– SKYACTIV-G 1.5L gasoline engine: 129 hp, 110 lb-ft of torque
– SKYACTIV-G 2.0L gasoline engine: 155 hp, 148 lb-ft of torque

In addition to the above two powertrains, Kudo Hidetoshi, head of Mazda global PR, told media that the factory is also considering a turbocharged high performance version of the Miata in the future.
