The Mercedes-Benz W205 C class was initially announced in the 2014 Detroit auto show, and has been on sale for a couple months. Compared to the previous W204 C class, the new generation is using aluminum alloy extensively in the car body construction.
Although lighter, aluminum alloy typically has less strength than the high-strength steel (HSS). Therefore, it is a challenge for auto maker to get good results in the crash test.
Today Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released result for the W205 C class’s moderate overlap front test, and also the side impact test.
Generally speaking, the W205 achieved similar results as the W204 C class in both of the tests. Although it appears there is no improvement in the new C class, considering the challenge from its aluminum body construction, this is already an enhancement.

With the good results in the previous two tests, we are curious to see how the W205 C class will perform in the roof strength test, and also the small overlap test.
