Report: 2015 Volvo XC90 Pricing Less Consumer Friendly in China

After the official reveal of the newly redesigned 2015 XC90, Volvo also announced the pricing for China market, the country where Volvo’s parent company is located in.

The 2015 XC90 will starts at RMB 818,000 for the most base model (however, we do not know what is the most base model of XC90 for the China market at this moment); and the “First Edition” which is limited to 1927 units (see our report yesterday), will be sold for RMB 1,058,000 (1.05-million RMB), and of course, since it is a limited production, you cannot negotiate the price.

The pricing of the 2015 XC90 in China is considered to be very steep by many Chinese consumers. To give you an idea of what car you can buy for RMB 1.05-million now, here are some examples:

– You can buy a decently loaded BMW 740Li, for just RMB 911,600 (0.91 million) without negotiation;
– You can buy a fully loaded 2014 Mercedes-Benz S400L, for a little more money: RMB 1.098 million;
– You can buy a decently loaded 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL350 4Matic BlueTEC, for RMB 1.028 million.

So basically speaking, the 2015 XC90 First Edition, which is carrying a price of USD $65,900 in US, is sold for a price similar to, or even much higher than some full-size flagship luxury sedans, or some full-size luxury SUV.

This is obviously not a good news for Volvo enthusiasts in China; but on the other hand, reading the bright side this indicates Volvo really cares the US market, since the XC90 T6 AWD with many valuable standard features is only sold for $48,900, I consider it to be a good value.

As a side note, comparing to the 2015 XC90 T6 AWD trim, you may find that a similarly equipped Acura MDX (the SH-AWD with Technology Package trim) is asking for a MSRP of $48,840. Clearly, this time the XC90 is targeting the Acura MDX.
