Mercedes-Benz Delayed Apple CarPlay System Integration

The Apple CarPlay system provides unified user experiences, and provides strong ability to extending/customizing the functionality that each car maker wants individually.

The CarPlay system received good response in the auto industry, and many makers have expressed intention to integrate this system into their future products. It looks like the CarPlay system is an immediate hit and success.

However, if something looks “too good to be true”, then it may encounter some unexpected setbacks when it proceeds. For example, previously Mercedes-Benz promised to use the system in its cars in 2014, but recent messages from the German auto maker indicates it has postponed the plan to some future date, and probably starts in 2015.

According to Mercedees-Benz, the reason why they postponed the plan is, they are also designing the hardware which can support CarPlay and other platforms at the same time. It is also possible that Mercedes-Benz not install the CarPlay in the factory, and requires interested customer to install the system as an aftermarket component.

It seems Apple still need to conquer some obstacles to promote its CarPlay system. Currently, Hyundai and Volvo are the only two auto makers that already has, or confirmed the Apple system in its products.
